Heat Pump Water Heater Cross-Section Diagram

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) was funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) to provide data sharing capabilities to the U.S. Department of Energy, industry partners, and other research entities through a centralized database for all heat pump (HP) and heat pump water heater (HPWH) field validation studies.

Mission

Our mission is to develop and maintain a central database to serve as a data sharing platform between private and government sectors:

  • Define standard data collection format
  • Recruit data to be entered into database
  • Promote the use of this database

Benefit

Curation of a centralized database for HP and HPWH field data will provide a compilation of datasets for research questions that have been answered and will demonstrate which challenges are still faced by the industry. These findings will be used to inform DOE research priorities, especially toward cold-climate HPs. This provides the opportunity to create a web tool for researchers to perform data processing of raw data and generate data visualizations with an overview of performance metrics for specific fields across similar projects. The entire process is designed for maximum usability to promote collaboration between industry leaders.

Impact

Through the development of the HP and HPWH database, a data sharing platform will be established between private industries and the government sector that promotes collaboration in tackling difficult research challenges.

Users must note that this centralized database for HP and HPWH field data is different from DOE’s Compliance Certification Management System (CCMS) database, which houses reports and compliance statements submitted by manufacturers for covered products and equipment subject to Federal conservation standards.
